Profession: Accountant |
| What is your general satisfaction level?: | 6 (on a scale of 1 to 10) |
|
Did this profession meet your expectations: | Somewhat |
| If you could "do it all over again", would you have chosen this profession?: | Probably Not |
| Any Pros: | Good pay, skills that apply to all industries, good basic understanding of business comes with the training, often a quick way to become part of a management group |
| Any Cons: | Long hours, feeling that you are not really a part of the team or not appreciated by the "operational" staff |
| Any Advice: | Make sure you take the right kind of accounting qualification - do you want to work in industry or in auditing. My experience is that people who trained in one type tends to hire similarly trained people meaning there can be invisible barriers to some jobs. Put in the effort to get qualified as a CPA or the equivalent as the future rewards in the way of increased salary are more than worth the few years of hard study. A very popular route is to train with a large audit firm and then make the move into industry after gaining audit experience of a range of clients in different markets. |
