Category: Accounting/Auditing
Profession: bookkeeper
What is your general satisfaction level?: 5 (on a scale of 1 to 10)
Did this profession meet your expectations:Yes
If you could "do it all over again", would you have chosen this profession?: Probably Not
Any Pros:I work in an office environment, forty hours a week. Seldom is there reason for me to put in overtime. There is always work to be done. As a clerk, I work alongside and am supervised by a degreed accountant and there is always something new to be learning.
Any Cons:It does get very repetitive. I process the same transactions day after day, week after week, sitting at a computer. Someone must do it, though, and do it in a timely manner.
Any Advice:This occupation doesn't really require a college degree, but it does require a rudimentary understanding of accounting. A clerk probably will (or should) always work under the supervision of an accountant or a full-charge bookkeeper. It is a good occupation for someone who can handle repetitiveness and still maintain accuracy; someone who understands that what they are doing may seem drudgery but is important to the maintenance of an accurate set of books and ultimately to the financial statements of the company they're working for; someone who enjoys working at a computer in an office.
